Here's my process. For any work in progress (novel or short story) I write offline, save in a USB drive, email myself a copy of each update as the weeks/months go by, and also send backup copies to my mother, as an off-site backup. Then, when they are finished, I print copies, whilst keeping all files everywhere fully up to date.

With articles, my process isn't quite as arduous, suffice to say I back everything up offline as well as online.
