Interesting. Historically, America has always been more prudish than Brits and Europeans when it comes to sex/nudity. In the UK, generally the BBFC take a dimmer view of violence than they do of sex. Hence, why we get uncut versions of films that often get cut or slapped with NC-17 ratings in the US, and sometimes with 15 rather than 18 certificates.
