I admire Derrickson greatly as a filmmaker, and I enjoyed The Black Phone, but I don't think it is as outstanding as you make out, primarily because I think it ends in a rather ordinary manner (albeit in a well-executed manner). I wrote more about this in my review (here, if you're interested). :)
