I agree with all of these. I can't believe some people defend Alien 3. No, it isn't a neglected masterpiece, no matter what version you view. There are major problems with the script that can't be overcome by good performances or stylish direction. Fundamentally the idea of killing Ripley is stupid because it undermines the entire point of the previous films: She is a survivor. Also the crash landing that kills Newt and Hicks is lazy, undramatic, and unsatisfying. In short, there is Alien. There is Aliens. The rest are bastard children.

However, elsewhere Fincher is a great director.

Regarding Coppola, I honestly wonder if he was assassinated at some point and replaced with a talentless doppelganger. How else can you go from The Conversation to Jack?

With The Hobbit, I don't hate it, but talk about over-egging the pudding. It didn't need to be three films. Two at the most, and for heaven's sake stick to the novel. There was no need to include half the stuff Peter Jackson included (or added). It was almost as though he took the opposite approach to what he did with the (excellent) films of The Lord of the Rings, which pared down the novel removing quite a bit, and emphasised what was cinematic.

I'm not a fan of The Hateful Eight, for a variety of reasons, but I'd probably pick Death Proof as Tarantino's worst.

As for Peter Weir: I'm a huge fan of his films and I must confess I do rather like The Mosquito Coast, even though the book is difficult to adapt and the film is deeply flawed. Harrison Ford gives a terrific performance.

Thank you very much for reading and commenting. :)
