I already had an insatiable appetite for cinema at the age of 7, so what my family knew or didn't know about film was largely irrelevant. I just watched every film I possibly could.
That said, my parents weren't big on sci-fi either. So my viewings of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Planet of the Apes, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, etc were made alone. Same with TV series like Star Trek and Doctor Who. But they did like fantasy. So The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, the Narnia books, etc were all read to us as children. (And my father later read the Harry Potter series to his grandchildren, as obviously they weren't around when I was a child.) They also liked Star Wars (which is pretty much fantasy in space) and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (a fairy tale rather than sci-fi) and time travel comedies (so Back to the Future was a big hit with them). :)
