The Irish monks and monasteries — which were double monasteries, both male and female, and centres of learning or early universities training lawyers, teachers, preachers, etc. — were famous for their learning, for example demonstrated in their illuminated manuscripts, the Book of Kells, the Lindisfarne Gospels, the Book of Armagh, the Book of Durrow, the Durham Gospels, and many others.
