I broadly agree with everything you say here. The Lord of the Rings films are cinema classics, but obviously one should read the novel too (ideally first).
The Hobbit films are filled with unnecessary and often silly extra material, but the stuff directly from the book (riddles with Gollum, conversation with Smaug, etc) is well done and I love Martin Freeman in the lead. But yes - a serious over-egged pudding.
