I can’t say I agree that statement holds true for Cameron’s other work. For example, the ironies of Sarah almost becoming a Terminator of sorts in Terminator 2 adds some nice depth. But the main reason his earlier films are better is they are strong stories with characters we can root for. Nor have those films had a sense of humour bypass. Yes, they were groundbreaking too, technically, but that felt more like the icing on the cake. Here, it is the entire cake, and after eating too much icing, one simply feels sick, if you follow me.
I do agree with what you say about Cameron over romanticising certain elements, but in those earlier films it all feels far less egregious.
