Here’s a hot take: I can’t name another genre that personifies setting better than gothic literature. Descriptions of the setting (typically, but not necessarily, taking place in the Victorian era) always accentuate the characters’ captivity in ways that bring inanimate features to life. The abandoned manor is not an abandoned soul; the walls inhale and exhale, squeezing the sanity out of its guests.
