I definitely prefer this version. The US version wimps out of the hint that (MAJOR SPOILER ALERT) Eli is a castrated boy rather than a girl. Plus there is more ambiguity in how the ending could be interpreted (I actually think it is pretty dark, despite how it appears). :)
