I don't know enough about DC comics to comment, but I always approach a film as an entity in its own right, regardless of source material. Thanos was a superb, well-written, well-motivated villain in the Avengers films, regardless of whether his character is similar to Darkseid (not sure which came first).

In this, the villains are plain dull, regardless of how they may come across in the comics.
