I don't think all adjectives are bad, any more than I think all adverbs are bad. But I believe with adjectives, it's worth sticking to one wherever possible, if they are used. As for adverbs, it depends on context. In "smiled happily", "happily" is superfluous, but in "smiled cruelly", "cruelly" is an important modifier. :)
