I don't think any director can claim sole authorship, for all the reasons I lay out in this article, but it is definitely true some directors endeavour to bring more of themselves - either through visual style or thematically - to a particular film. And yes, this sometimes involves a more hands-on approach with screenplays. But that still doesn't make them the sole author. :)
