I don't think either of those films are as simplistic as you claim. The character of Upham and the various ambiguities around his character in Saving Private Ryan are hugely important, to the point I'd argue he's the key character in the film, beyond Captain Miller or even Private Ryan. I don't think Schindler's List is simplistic either. Amon Goeth is a monster, but Spielberg never paints him as a one-dimensional caricature. As for Schindler, he's a mass of contradiction; a womaniser, Nazi party member, and war profiteer, who yes, finds a conscience, but he remains something of an enigma, I think. Still, glad you think they're great films regardless. :)
