I don't think Lynch's Dune was for Herbert devotees. It certainly riled a lot of them (including me). Still, the costume tour sounds interesting.
As for the Harkonnens, yes they are sadistic and evil in the novel, but I felt Lynch reduced the Baron to a pantomime villain, taking away his Machiavellian scheming and instead inventing the heart plug thing, which serves to amplify the novel's inherent homophobia. This heart plug bit is not in the book, and whilst under different circumstances I would have commended Lynch for inventive depravity, it simply didn't belong in this film.
By contrast, the new films by Denis Villeneuve are fabulous. :)
