I enjoyed it in a so-bad-its-good sort of way. Especially the loony neighbours and their wonderfully eccentric preservation society. "Not very neighbourly!"

But yes, the ending was bollocks. Given how removed from reality this almost certainly is, they ought to make up an ending (I like your idea of the daughter, or even the son for that matter). This isn't Reversal of Fortune, for goodness sake. Ambiguity isn't a virtue here.
