My thoughts on Woody Allen:
1. I love his films. He has a hugely impressive body of work: Annie Hall, Sleeper, Love and Death, Zelig, Manhattan, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors, Husbands and Wives, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Bullets Over Broadway, Everyone Says I Love You, Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona, Match Point, Blue Jasmine... You get the point. All of these are terrific films I love, and will continue watch and appreciate regardless of whatever may or may not have taken place in his personal life.
2. The abuse allegation: It's a he said/she said situation. I wasn't a juror in the trial where he was acquitted. I havent' seen/heard all the evidence. I wasn't there. Nor were any of us. Therefore, the only sane, rational response to all the controversy is: We don't know.
3. If he is guilty of a crime (as opposed to merely being considered "creepy" - and I may well agree with that) then he should be tried and convicted if the evidence exists. But I'd still watch his films, for the same reason I still watch Roman Polanski films. I separate art from artist.
Finally, I should add I don't consider box office failure a metric on whether a film is good or bad, even in Woody Allen's case.
