I imagine a lot of people operate that way. I suppose it rather depends if one is in the habit of going to the cinema alone (I have been since childhood, though my wife does accompany me on occasion, and obviously sometimes the children do too). But the general point stands: Aside from fanatical extremists like me, most people go to the cinema when there's something that captures their imagination (either alone or with others).
I know cinema can be expensive in certain venues. My solution is to own a Cineworld unlimited card (£10.99 per month) for as many films as I like a month. I go to independent venues too, and sometimes they can be a little more expensive (anywhere between £4 and £9 per ticket, here in the southwest).
