I just don't think the Baron's sexuality is particularly relevant to the overall narrative, personally. Therefore, I think Villeneuve was justified in removing or downplaying that element. There are plenty of gay villains in other films where their sexuality is legitimately linked to the narrative (Tom Ripley's anti-hero in The Talented Mr Ripley, for instance).
