I know many good home cinema setups exist (and I'm glad you have one) but the truth is even the biggest and most expensive can't compete with the biggest screens and sound systems (like IMAX for instance). Do you have a room that size, equipped with Dolby Atmos sound? And even if you did, is it soundproofed so you don't annoy neighbours? How are the acoustics?
The article I link to about home cinema also makes the point that not everyone can afford the kind of systems you describe, nor do they have the space in their homes. Therefore, the blanket argument about home cinema rivalling cinemas falls apart in any case. Plus it overlooks that sense of occasion one gets when going to the cinema. You don't need to go and pick up the phone (as your wife nearly did). The psychological experience and mindset one has in a cinema is completely different to that of the home. It is a ritual, almost religious in nature, I'd argue.
So nope, I'm not convinced. Cinema is the best. That's a hill I will die on. :)
