I personally think Hollywood has never been more timid or cynical in it's desparate approach to cynically cater to a machine that demands "content". There are a few honourable exceptions to this, but we are light years from the golden eras of the 1930s, the 1970s (Hollywood's second golden era), or even the 1990s (which featured a ton of innovative, groundbreaking mainstream studio releases).
On the other hand, I'd argue independent cinema, and filmmaking outside the US, is as vibrant and creative as ever, even if it does happen on much lower budgets and without big stars. The best film I've seen in recent years is Parasite: An utterly singular work that I was thrilled won Best Picture.
