I remember going to see this with my father during the original release (I was 12 at the time) and being completely blown away, emotionally. Arguably, Steven Spielberg's most underrated film. Full of outstanding performances - John Malkovich, Nigel Havers, Miranda Richardson, and of course Christian Bale, plus superbly directed by Spielberg, with images that will stay with me for the rest of my life. At the end, it's almost unbearably moving when he thinks he sees Miranda Richardson's soul going up to heaven, and it's the nuclear strike on Hiroshima in the distance ("I learned a new word today: atom bomb"). Honestly, I tear up just thinking about that scene.
