I still think The Truman Show deserved to win Best Picture. Saving Private Ryan deserved Best Director for the opening alone (which revolutionised war films and proved hugely influential), but I think on points, The Truman Show is the stronger film overall. However, Saving Private Ryan would certainly have been a better winner than Shakespeare in Love. So would The Thin Red Line (also nominated that year).
