I think Peter Jackson was very smart in the way he got himself into the industry, by starting with low budget extreme cinema (Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, Braindead). That stuff has a small but dedicated audience, and that got him the chance to make Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, and afterwards The Lord of the Rings. The rest is obviously history. :)
