I think the film's intention (beyond being compelling entertainment) is to make people stop and have a conversation. The fact that we're doing that to me indicates it succeeded. But I also think it's a much better film than you give it credit for, purely as a piece of visceral cinema. Perhaps it is "contextless" to a degree, but I don't think it necessarily matters. Authoritarianism (of the left or right variety) is something to nip in the bud. I think the film deftly avoids shutting out Republicans, perhaps encouraging them to a "Hang on a minute" position.
