I think the Oscar nominations should not be about "optics" but which films, directors, actors, etc are the best. Personally, I enjoyed Barbie, but wouldn't have nominated it for Best Picture in an incredibly competitive year for film. I think other films were more deserving. I also think the other directors nominated were more deserving (remember, there can only be five, whereas the Best Picture nominees can be up to ten). Based on quality of direction (not "optics"), which one of them would you oust to put in Greta Gerwig?

The Margot Robbie thing, I do have more sympathy for (though again, it's a very competitive field). I wrote more about my opinion on this matter in detail here, if you're interested. :)
