I think there's an unfair assumption that we plotters don't experiment. This isn't true. I sketch all kinds of alternative scenarios, ideas, characters, plot structures, etc, but at the planning stage in miniature, not 50,000 words into the first draft. It's far better to discover something doesn't work after one page than a hundred.
