Out of all of Scorsese’s brilliant films about self-sabotaging, masochistic men who feel they deserve to suffer or that their suffering serves some greater purpose — from Charlie Cappa in Mean Streets, Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, Jake La Motta in Raging Bull, Newland Archer in The Age of Innocence, Sebastião Rodrigues in Silence, among others — Bringing Out the Dead is the one film to state outright the lesson these self-abusive characters must learn.
