I think U2 lasted for similar reasons, but I believe (if I may put my "Christian" hat on here for a moment) humans aren't meant to be "worshipped", which is difficult when it comes to pop acts, groups etc. Applause, appreciation, fandom, etc (which is all fair enough to a point) can become addictive and destructive.
