I usually like Joaquin Phoenix, but here he's just doing one thing the entire time, and it becomes rather tiresome. Not his fault though. I blame Aster. The more distance I get from this film, the more I think it was a pretentious, self-indulgent, overlong mess. But as you say, at least it was Aster's mess.
