I was one of the only two people who saw The Abyss - aka the only James Cameron film that didn't terminate box office records - in the cinema during the original 1989 run. OK, so there were probably more than two people who saw it, but we were alone in the cinema (ie me and my friend Mark), it died at the box office, and I've never met anyone else who saw it in the cinema, so that's the story I'm sticking to. Needless to say, we were both hugely impressed (despite the flawed ending, though it works better in the later released extended cut), and couldn't understand why the film bombed.
