I watched The Birth of a Nation many decades ago, only once, in my late teens. For film scholars, it's an important film, no question, but it's also so horrifically, absurdly racist (the Klan emerging as a heroic group) that it makes Gone with the Wind look like a civil rights tract in comparison.
