I know The Little Mermaid gets a lot of flak these days. It’s called anti-feminist. Ariel, despite being one of the most distinctive Disney princesses as far as personality and appearance, is torn down for trading away her old life (and her voice!) just for the sake of a guy. The ending, with its trademark fairy-tale wedding and happily-ever-after montage, now gets more eye rolls than happy sighs of contentment from viewers. I’m sure there are parents who refuse to let their children watch this film along with the rest of pre-00’s Disney canon.

I will also add that I feel sorry for children who are not permitted to view this by overly PC parents, for much the same reason that I felt sorry for children of evangelical Baptist parents when Disney films were boycotted by such groups in the early 1990s (around the time The Little Mermaid was released).
