I'd have given the Oscar to Witness or Back to the Future that year (neither of which won, and Back to the Future wasn't even nominated), but The Color Purple is a fine film, and it was ridiculous to nominate it for eleven Oscars but overlook Spielberg in the director category. Quite a snub.
