Hard-core Puritan and one of the most hated men in Irish history, Oliver Cromwell, stood against Christmas decorations, carols, and joy in the season. Seriously. Cromwell believed expressions of joy would betray the sacred miracle of Christmas. No “Joy to the World!” for Cromwell.
