I'd strongly challenge this with the likes of Nosferatu, Frankenstein, Psycho, The Innocents, The Exorcist, The Wicker Man, Don't Look Now, The Shining, and many others. But I do agree that on the whole, horror is often (sadly) considered a more disreputable genre.
