If you had to pick a Weir film, I'd probably go with Green Card as his least interesting work (though again, that is in relative terms). However, I love Dead Poets Society. I think it has a superb screenplay with a genuinely inspirational core, plus a great Robin Williams performance and fine support from the likes of Ethan Hawke, etc. I still find it immensely moving and powerful.

However, did the screenplay deserve to beat Do the Right Thing? Possibly not. It's a tough one. That year also had a very strong directorial line up. Oliver Stone won Best Director in the end (Born on the Fourth of July), but the other nominees were also fairly well deserving. I am very surprised Spike Lee wasn't nominated, I must say. Perhaps I'd have given him a place over Jim Sheridan, Woody Allen, or Kenneth Branagh instead. I love Dead Poets Society too much to boot Weir.

I also think it's a shame Glory was shut out of the major categories, as I find that a rather underrated piece of work.
