I'm a Christian, but I stopped refering to myself as "evangelical" many years ago partly for the US politics reasons you outline here (less of an issue in the UK, where I hail from), and partly because I don't subscribe to many of the nonsensical legalistic dictates of their narrow theological interpretation. I'm actually pleased this movement is being seen for the monster it really is, at long last. (And yes, I know not all evangelicals are bad, but I really do think the good ones should distance themselves from Trump cult lunacy, etc, by not using the term anymore).
