I'm assuming you've seen the Robert Wise version of The Haunting, circa 1963?

Why not try The Little Stranger? It's mild, but it's psychologically intriguing. At the wet-your-pants scary end of things, I recommend The Changeling (not the Clint Eastwood film Changeling with Angelina Jolie, which is completely unrelated). Or The Others, if you've not seen that one. Stir of Echoes isn't bad either.

Actually, I've just thought of another film that would be right up your street: The Orphanage.
