I’m not a massive fan of Independence Day. I prefer War of the Worlds and 1983 mini series V in the alien invasion stakes. That year I also had far more time for the subversive glee of Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! which cleverly sends up militaristic tropes, political opportunism, and the usual US jingoism in favour of marginalised characters saving the day instead (ie nerdy young people, the elderly, etc).
All that said, you’ve made a good argument here, and I do enjoy the first act of Independence Day (up to and including the White House blowing up). :)
