I'm not sure it is quite that straightforward, certainly not in every western of the period. The subtexts in films like The Naked Spur (reflecting the Freudian self-questioning of the 1950s), The Searchers (a condemnation of pathological, murderous racism), and High Noon (a condemnation of McCarthyism) would indicate othewise.
