I'm not sure they were hysterical overreactions. The video hints at why she could have felt unsafe, and it's entirely fair that she removed herself from what could have been a potentially volatile situation for herself and her daughter. Perhaps Douglas's character failed to get the help she urged him to get, and lacked the self-awareness to see himself for what he was really like. All of this is hinted at, I believe, leaving the viewer to draw their own conclusions.
