I'm not sure why I'd want to escape. As the Bible says (somewhere in the book of Proverbs off the top of my head), grant me neither poverty nor riches.

That said, being made redundant from a job I'd had for over 23 years in 2000 (when the TV company I worked at got taken over by Americans and they "restructured") certainly braced us. But I'm so much happier as a novelist/freelance writer now that I wouldn't ever really want a "proper job". My wife is happier too. :)
