I'm not usually one for going on about such things, but in this specific case, I agree with you. The scene definitely plays in a far more (unintentionally, as you say) disturbing way to modern audiences.

This whole article is brilliant and fascinating by the way. I like both versions of the film, but your analysis of the gender politics is absolutely spot-on.
