Immensely reductive, to my mind. At it's very best, for me, horror is masochistic catharsis in an out-of-body experience sort of way. Very few horror films deliver that level of brilliance, but those that do have a very special place in my heart.

Also, there's a nonsensical idea that horror films are for those who are "desensitised". Again, not true. More on that subject here:
