In case you weren't aware, here in the UK, student loans are automatically forgiven after a certain number of years, and you don't need to start paying them back until you're earning above a particular threshold. Far more humane and reasonable, to my mind.
Of course, we used to have grants given to students, but Margaret Thatcher and John Major - and later Tony Blair - gradually did away with all that. Disgraceful, to my mind. Then again, Blair tried to encourage everyone to go to university which was unnecessary, thus making students get into huge amounts of debt and devaluing the value of a degree in many if not most cases. And of course, to the rich students, it made no difference either way in any case.
