In fairness, The Last Broadcast pulled a similar stunt a few months before the release of The Blair Witch Project. In addition, the found-footage thing has it's origins in pranks like the BBC's 1992 Ghostwatch, Peter Watkins documentaries, and of course Orson Welles's notorious 1938 radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds. :)
