In fairness, very few stories can effectively answer this without directly endorsing a particular religious worldview.

However, there are exceptions where it has been cleverly done: Powell/Pressburger's A Matter of Life and Death, for instance (carefully avoids anything religious). It's a Wonderful Life (explicitly Christian), and His Dark Materials (explicitly anti-Christian).
