In those days, the UK music scene was vastly superior to the US, in my not remotely humble opinion.

The UK music scene had a much different flavor early in the millennium. Things like Britpop, the Manchester scene, and yes, the Spice Girls of the 90s had reinvigorated the music here, and many pop and rock bands with fresh new energy sprang up in the aftermath.
