Indeed. My concern is that if people don’t stand up to these bullies (who for some insane reason think cancel culture is “progressive”), organisations like the BBFC (who in truth have never really been a censorship body — they merely age rate films based on consultation, and try to reflect what the UK public wants) end up misguidedly kowtowing to what they think people en masse want and start banning things. We’re a long way from that at present, but there is a slippery slope to such scenarios. For instance, I’ve noted that rereleases of a lot of classic movies which had U certificates are being upgraded to PG, 12A, or even higher, because of these sorts of sensitivities. At the moment it isn’t a big deal, but that could change gradually over time. How long till classic films are then censored, or cancelled, or whatever? A disturbing thought.
